As you enjoy the early fall garden, and start those seasonal clean-up tasks, you may be reflecting on what worked well this year and what you might like to change.
After all, while the promise of spring remains six months away, there’s no time like the present to start planning … and planting!
The question, often, is where to start. For many in and around Sequim, the answer is New Dungeness Nursery, where you’ll not only find a wealth of plants, shrubs and trees selected for our Olympic Peninsula climate, but also an experienced team that can help you choose the right plants and design for your garden goals.
Good garden design starts with local knowledge
The nursery team offers free one-hour consultations in your garden – the chance to take advantage of decades of local experience to explore questions about planting and caring for your garden, and common challenges, such as irrigation, deer or problem plants.
As a landscaper with more than 40 years of experience in Sequim, New Dungeness founder Doug Cockburn boasts a wealth of knowledge that he loves sharing with homeowners. Sharing his passion is son Stew, a Certified Professional Horticulturist who’s has spent his life learning from his father.
For gardeners who’d like a more formal plan for their property, Stew will follow the site visit with a detailed plant design, selecting and positioning plants for size, spacing, color, texture and other considerations according to your garden design goals.
“Of course, we love ‘talking plants,’ but this really is a way to respond to our customers’ need for garden guidance at a reasonable price,” Stew explains.
For the $900 flat fee, Stew provides the initial garden visit and consultation, with added time for measurements and reference photos. Back at the nursery, he’ll create a scaled plant design and detailed plant list with pricing, and a rendering.
“It’s so nice to hear, ‘Thank you, that’s beautiful – I can’t wait to start!’” Stew says.
While many gardeners enjoy planting themselves, if you’d like to leave the digging to someone else, Stew has a list of local professionals he can recommend, based on the size and scope of the project. And, as always, plant delivery is free.
Fall plant sale is on now!
With the autumn rains – and planting season – on the way, it’s time for New Dungeness Nursery’s annual fall plant sale, on now through Sept. 29. Enjoy 20 percent off everything, plus some special clearance items at 50 percent off.
For those looking for fall colour, Stew says thesour gums are incredible, along with shrubs like Leucothoe, whortleberry and golden ninebark, which transitions from a bright chartreuse to darker yellow and produces small flower clusters perfect for pollinators. Among the Pacific Northwest native plants, evergreen mahonia (Oregon grape), offers holly-like leaves and blue berries following a showy early spring display of bee-friendly yellow flowers.
