County looks at changes to Critical Areas Code

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St. The agenda includes proposed changes to agriculture land uses within the Clallam County Critical Areas Code. Call 417-2277 for more information.

‘Eagle’ rally set for Saturday

An EAA Young Eagle Rally is set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Sequim Valley Airport, 468 Dorothy Hunt Lane, Sequim.

The event offers free airplane rides for youths ages 8-17 (with parent approval and weather permitting). The event is sponsored by volunteers of EAA Chapter 430.

Next community talk on tap

The CommunityPlus group hosts a community conversation from 1-3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Sequim. The subject is “The Sense of Potential that Defines Our Community” and how that potential can be realized. Appetizers, salads and drinks will be available for purchase.

‘Coffee with the Mayor’ events continue

Sequim residents can meet informally with Mayor Dennis Smith at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill, 707 E. Washington St. Public Works Director David Garlington joins the mayor for the September meeting. The mayor will be the Bell Creek Bar and Grill each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community.

Sequim Gazette collecting for food bank

The Sequim Gazette (147 W. Washington St.) and Peninsula Daily News are collecting items for local food banks through Oct. 15. Drop off items for the Sequim Food Bank at the Gazette, or items for the Port Angeles Food Bank at the PDN office, 305 W. First St., Port Angeles.

Those who donate get a classified ad coupon, good for a three-line ad in the Gazette for one edition or a three-line ad for four days in the PDN. Call 683-3311 for more information.

Library sale set

The Friends of Sequim Library host a monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, in the group’s building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

This month’s sale features Christian novels published by Tyndale, Bethany House, Zondervan and Harvest House. Also available are more than 40 jigsaw puzzles, a collection of books about raising and racing pigeons, doll collecting with many patterns for making doll hats and reference books about amateur ham radio, especially about building antennas. There is an eight-volume set of books by John Lyons in his “Making of a Perfect Horse” series of raising, training and caring for horses.

Proceeds from the sale benefit children’s and adult programming at the Sequim Library.

Vigil set for Sept. 10

A “Vigil for Victims of Violence” is scheduled for 7-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Port Angeles City Pier.

The event was created for “remembering and honoring those impacted by violence, creating remembrance flags, music and interfaith prayers.” Participants are welcome to bring flowers and battery-operated candles.

Sequim garden club hosts lighthouse speaker

The Sequim Prairie Garden Club is hosting Chad Kaiser from the New Dungeness Lighthouse Association at its next meeting, set for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at the group’s clubhouse at Pioneer Memorial Park, Sequim.

The event is free and open to the public.

Spaghetti dinner slated at American Legion

The American Legion hosts a spaghetti dinner from 4-6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the legion hall, 107 E. Prairie St., Sequim.

Cost is $5 per plate; veterans and children younger than 5 eat for free.

The meal includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad, vegetable and a roll. The dinner also features random free raffles.

Republicans host fall roundup

The Clallam County Republicans will be having their third annual Fall Roundup set for 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Home Arts Building at the Clallam County Fairgrounds (1608 W. 16th St., Port Angeles). Western wear is most welcome.

Bill Bryant, Republican candidate for governor, will be the main speaker. Other GOP candidates running in the November election for county and state offices also will be speaking throughout the evening.

There will be a Western barbecue as well as a no-host bar. Bret Wiggins will be performing Western songs as an Elvis tribute artist.

Tickets are $20 per person with children younger than 12 free. Tickets will be sold at the door for $25 each.

PFOA joins national pet adoption promotion

Peninsula Friends of Animals joins national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society, along with animal rescue groups and shelters across the country, in the “MVP/Kick Off” animal adoption campaign during the month of September.

The promotion includes a $25 adoption fee, adoption counseling, complete health check up, vaccinations and FELV/FIV test, spay/neuter services and microchip. Visit www.safehavenpfoa.org for more information.

Balance class starts

Join a 24-session balance class that uses adapted Tai Ji Quan movement to improve strength, mobility, balance and prevent falls in older adults. With funding assistance through the Olympic Area Agency on Aging, classes are offered at no cost to individuals older than 60; a minimum 70 percent attendance is requested. Afternoon classes in Sequim, Carlsborg and Port Angeles are being filled now. Classes run twice weekly, Sept. 19-Dec. 15.

Oktoberfest comes early at Shipley Center

The Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., Sequim, hosts a Bavarian-themed party with music, food and more at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Local boating group sets annual picnic

The North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron, a local unit of a national organization devoted to safe boating worldwide, will be having its annual picnic on Saturday, Sept. 24. The public is invited.

Festivities will be held at the Port Angeles Yacht Club Facility and will include a flare shoot and practice, a fire extinguisher demonstration, a boat safety ring toss and a silent auction of gently used nautical items. Bring your out of date flares and you will receive instruction on their use and be able to practice in a safe environment.

Doors open at 1 p.m. with lunch available for $7 plus a potluck side dish of your choice. Safety demonstrations and practice will be prior to lunch. Reservations are required.

Burn ban downgraded

Annette Warren, Clallam County Fire Marshal, announced last week that a county-wide burn ban has been modified to permit campfires in established fire rings on private property and in campgrounds.

The fire danger in general for Clallam County remains high, she notes, and that people should be extremely careful.

This decision was made based on recommendations of the local fire districts as weather conditions have slightly eased the fire danger in Western Washington. The burn ban will remain in effect until further notice.

The Clallam County Fire Marshal’s office works closely with local fire districts and local fire departments, and strongly urges all county residents and property owners to be attentive to the condition of their properties through proactive fire prevention measures.

Historical society guest from national archives

The Clallam County Genealogical Society meets from 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Raymond Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

The meeting’s speaker is Susan Karran from the National Archives and Records Administration. Her topic is “How to find a gate in your brick wall.” There is no cost and the public is welcome to attend. Participants are asked to come 10-20 minutes early to register, visit and have coffee.

OMC sets jewelry, scarves sales

The OMC Auxiliary Jewelry and Scarves Sale is set for Oct. 5 in Port Angeles and Oct. 12 in Sequim.

The Oct. 5 event is at the Olympic Medical Center main campus (939 Caroline St., Port Angeles) from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; donations may be left at the gift shop.

Then the sale is repeated on Oct. 12 at OMC’s Medical Services Building at 840 N. Fifth. Ave, Sequim, also from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; donations may be left at the reception desk.

ONP bringing back ‘Every Kid in a Park’

Olympic National Park encourages all fourth-graders to visit the park for free this year as part of the Every Kid in a Park program. The program gives fourth-grade students and those accompanying them free access to more than 2,000 federally managed lands and waters.

Olympic was selected to receive a 2016 field trip grant from the National Park Foundation, the official charitable partner of America’s national parks, to support the program. The $7,320 grant will provide transportation for fourth-grade students from Sequim, Port Angeles, Crescent, Quillyaute Valley and Cape Flattery school districts to visit the park as part of the park’s “Ecosystems Olympic” program.
