OPHS plans planned giving presentation for Sept. 22

Learn how planned giving can help you wag more and bark less at a special presentation by Jim Hallett, a financial planner and nationally recognized leader in his profession. The presentation, sponsored by the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, is from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Vern Burton Center, 308 E. Fourth St. in Port Angeles. Balance training offered

The Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance, is an evidence-based fall prevention program for older adults. A two-day course is being offered to those who wish to establish a Tai Ji Quan program within their community. The focus of the class is to instruct the trainer. It will be from Oct. 15-16 at Sequim campus of Olympic Medical Center. A fee applies. The registration form can be downloaded at www.taijiquan-mbb-wa.org/workshop.html#register. Public arts conservation set for today at Civic Center

Join the City Arts Advisory Commission for a public arts conversation at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St. The agenda for the evening centers on a discussion of how best to improve communications in the arts community. Movie focuses on suffragettes

The Hillary for America campaign presents the 2015 movie “Suffragette” from noon-1:50 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. There is no admission.

The movie is a historical fiction and a vivid drama based on true stories, with early 20th-century working women fighting for equality and voting rights in Britain. It stars Carey Mulligan, Helen Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep. Voter registration and are volunteer opportunities available.

New in town?

If you are new to Sequim or considering relocating to Sequim, the “New in Town Conversation” gathering has been designed for you. The events are from 2:30-4:30 p.m. each third Wednesday every other month at First Federal, 333 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.

The next is Sept. 21 and the following is Nov. 16.

PFOA joins national pet adoption promotion

Peninsula Friends of Animals joins national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society, along with animal rescue groups and shelters across the country, in the “MVP/Kick Off” animal adoption campaign during September. The promotion includes a $25 adoption fee for mature pets; last week’s Sequim Gazette “Community News Briefs” contained incorrect information.

Learn about Medicare’s online resource

Learn to use Medicare’s Prescription Drug website (Part D) to enroll or review medical prescription plans from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., Port Angeles. Open enrollment begins Oct. 15. Computers will be available for this free SHIBA presentation sponsored by Senior Information and Assistance and the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.

HGTV’S newest hit series, “Tiny House, Big Living,” is looking for couples, families and singles who are leaving behind their conventional lives to build and live in a tiny house. Show representatives are seeking people who are just beginning or recently have begun building their tiny house project.

Meeting planned for Sequim Community Aid

A meeting for those interested in supporting the mission of Sequim Community Aid are invited to a meeting set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Clallam County Fire District 3 boardroom, 323 N. Fifth Ave. Donna Tidrick invites those who may want to become supporters or board members of the group.

The nonprofit, all-volunteer agency receives donations and grants in order to interview people in need of help with electricity, housing rent/mortgage and/or water during an emergency. Clients need to live in Sequim School District boundaries.

Garden sale slated

The Sequim Prairie Garden Club will be having its Fall Garden Sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St. Sale proceeds will be used to maintain and beautify Pioneer Memorial Park. There will be plants, bulbs, garden art, produce, home baked goods and more. The club also will have a raffle. Be sure and come early for the best selection.

PC scholarship funds available

Students enrolling at any Peninsula College campus for the first time this fall quarter may be eligible for up to $1,000 from the Peninsula College Foundation. This award, provided specifically for students who missed the FAFSA deadline, is available for part-time or full-time enrollees at the Port Angeles, Port Townsend or Forks campuses.

Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, which also is the last day to register for fall quarter classes at Peninsula College. The application for this emergency funding must be filled out online at: https://pencol.formstack.com/forms/emergencyfundingscholarship.

Students will be notified of their eligibility within one week of applying for the award.

Thrift shop open Saturday

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guilds thrift shop, 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m, Saturday, Sept. 17. Fall fashions for everyone are featured along with designer hand bags, fine jewelry, shoes, household item, dishes, furniture and lots of books and puzzles. All white-tagged items will be marked half-price.

Volunteer workers are needed and asked only to work a couple shifts a month. Call 683-7044 for more information.

Pageant meeting set

The Sequim Irrigation Festival Royalty Pageant Information meeting will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 22, in the Sequim High School Board Room, adjacent to the auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave. Please attend if you are a junior or senior and enrolled within the Sequim School district. Applications can be found on the website at www.irrigationfestival.com.

Hi-Cap services available

The Sequim School District announces an open referral process through Nov. 30 for students currently in grades K-12 who may qualify for Highly Capable (Hi-Cap) Program Services. Anyone from the community may refer students. If you are unsure of the characteristics of highly capable learners, go to: http://www.sequim.k12.wa.us/Page/4523. Paper referral forms are available at each school, the District Office and at the Sequim Library. You can access referral forms online at the district website at www.sequim.k12.wa.us. Referral forms must be received by close of business ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­on Nov. 30. All referrals must be returned to the Highly Capable coordinator at Sequim Middle School or school building secretaries. Watershed class offered

WSU Extension is offering a Watershed Stewards class from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 22-Oct. 27 at the Point Hudson Marina, Marina Room, Port Townsend. The class combines classroom lectures by regional experts with field trips to special protected areas all over East Jefferson County.

It’s designed for anyone interested in freshwater streams, salmon and watershed resources.

Deadline is Sept. 16.
