William “Bill” Revere Carriker

December 11, 1927 – December 4, 2016

William “Bill” Revere Carriker, M.Ed., D.Ed., of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2016 at the age of 88.

The elder son of the late Estel and Mazel Carriker, he was born December 11, 1927 in Harvard, Nebraska.

A pioneer in the field of Special Education and teacher training, Bill went on to receive a Master’s and Doctorate in Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska after graduating from Nebraska Wesleyan University.

His career path led him to teach at Long Beach State College, Calif.; to work in the U.S. Office of Education as the Director of research in the Division of Handicapped Children and Youth; to become Professor and Head of the Department of Special Education at the Pennsylvania State University; and finally until retirement, to the University of Virginia where he was Chairman and then Professor of the Department of Special Education.

One career highlight included a visiting professorship at Shanghai Teaching University, Shanghai, China. Bill was involved in the Council for Exceptional Children at the national level and also was elected Chairman for NCATE (The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education). He published many articles and chapters in books and served on numerous advisory boards and as an associate editor of the Journal of Exceptional Children.

Honors include receiving the first Worcester Memorial Award given by the University of Nebraska Department of Educational Psychology and Measurements, the Special Huhn Barnett Award in recognition of leadership and service by the Virginia Federation of the Council for Exceptional Children, the Phi Delta Kappa Distinguished Service Award, the National Special Education Teacher Educator of the Year Award, and was selected to represent seven national professional organizations in testimony before Federal House and Senate subcommittees on the need for leadership personnel in the field of special education.

Bill was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sequim, Wash., where he and Muriel lived for over twenty years. He spent time volunteering in Stephen Ministry, providing one-to-one Christian care to people who are hurting. A lifelong football fan, Bill followed the ups and downs of several college teams. He enjoyed gardening and had a talent for cultivating stunning roses.

He was predeceased by his brother, Wendell Carriker, and his beloved wife, Muriel Middleton Carriker, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.

Bill is survived by his daughters, LaRee Delahunt and her husband, Joe, of New Haven, Ct., and Cindy Carriker Dragich of Charlottesville, Va.; his son, Bruce Carriker, and his wife, Kim, of Earlysville, Va., ve grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces, in-laws, and dear friends.

A memorial service to celebrate his life was held on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

Susan “Sue” Mary Groff

In loving memory of Susan “Sue” Mary Groff

September 1, 1950 – December 2, 2016

Heaven truly received a gift when Sue went home to be with her Savior.

She was a loving and devoted wife to Robert “Bob” Groff and an exceptional mother to her children Michael and Christine.

Sue was always lled with grace and compassion for others, and blessed everyone around her. She was amazing as a registered nurse, stay at home mom, business partner, friend, and lover of Jesus. She loved to sing, was gifted at teaching and had a passion for others. She lived to serve, loved her family, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Robert, son Michael and his wife Lander, daughter Christine and her husband Bret, and seven grandchildren.

There will be a memorial/celebration of life service at 2 p.m. on January 7, 2017 at Dungeness Community Church 45 Eberle Ln, Sequim, WA 98382
