Tribe salmon coalition seek help with tree planting

The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe and the North Olympic Salmon Coalition are seeking volunteers to help plant native trees along the Dungeness River on March 23.
The event is set for 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Tools and gloves will be provided, but are in limited supply so participants are asked to bring their own. Light refreshments and hot drinks will be provided. Bring warm, waterproof clothes and boots, water and a lunch.

This is the makeup date for the Feb. 23 Dungeness River planting event that was postponed because of a snowstorm.
Coalition volunteers and crew will be setting out to plant 10,000-plus trees and shrubs this year.
In January 2016, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe purchased the property that will be planted, with funding from Puget Sound Acquisition and Restoration and Floodplains by Design. The restoration effort has involved removing three houses that were falling into the river, and re-vegetating the area in an attempt to restore the historic floodplain.
Coalition and tribe representatives say reforestation of the floodplain along the Dungeness River will help to improve water quality and create healthy habitat for the fish and wildlife that frequent the area.
