On June 5, members of Clallam County Fire District 3’s Carlsborg Station took part in a “Sidewalk Show and Tell” to share the message of fire safety. Firefighter/paramedic Casey Sires arranged the opportunity to reinforce good fire prevention techniques and an introduction to the importance of having emergency responders to kindergarten and first-graders at Greywolf Elementary.
About 160 students attended the training. Firefighters donned special gear called “bunker gear” or a “Protective Ensemble for Structural Firefighting.” The equipment protects the firefighters from high heat when they enter a burning building.
Equipment such as portable water can fire extinguishers, specialized rescue chainsaws and self-contained breathing apparatus were laid out for the students to observe. Some even got to spray water from a fire hose onto the dry grass.
Clallam County Fire District 3 hosts a variety of public outreach events throughout the year, including community CPR classes, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, engine visits and station tours (events can all be arranged by calling the administrative office, 360-683-4242, or by visiting ccfd3.org).
Greywolf’s K-1 Summer Reading Program begins Thursday, July 6, and runs 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At the sessions, current kindergarten and first-grade students will be able to exchange books fir daily reading at home, complete an activity or craft, get a free lunch, and get a handwriting practice packet they can complete at home and return for prizes. SEQUIM MIDDLE SCHOOL
Sequim Middle School’s Moving Up ceremony is 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, in the SMS gymnasium.
Student Zeke Davis recently earned community service hours for his great future at the Sequim Prairie Grange. President Dorinda Becker was happy to have the help. SMS teacher Cherise Feser helps organize and find projects for kids who want to earn community service hours in the community.
Feser also partnered with the Sequim YMCA to organize a boxing class for students in one of her classes who were interested in learning more about fitness and focus. The class was led by Bill Caples, a former Golden Gloves champion and “an amazing instructor with both the art of boxing and mental focus,” SMS reps said. The YMCA also gave out scholarships for any youth who didn’t have a membership.
