All Safe Mini Storage is expanding its services to what owners say might eventually double their available storage.

Co-owners Vern Frykholm and Tom Schaafsma recently finalized the purchase of 142 storage units at 74 Grant Road, near All Safe’s main office at 101 Grant Road. The 3.15-acre site includes a house that’s nearly 100 years old. Renters remain in the house until a plan for new units is finalized.

Frykholm said his goal is to begin working with the city next year to receive permitting for adding more units.

“We want to make it as nice as the Second Avenue site (completed in 2008) and across the street (on Grant Road),” he said. “We get a lot of compliments on those.”

Frykholm said the goal is to expand the new site in three phases: In the first, they’d clean and level the site, installing better drainage and fencing around the perimeter; in the second and third phases, they’d install buildings incrementally.

“We want to go with supply and demand,” he said.

Along with its storage on Grant Road, All Safe operates storage at 501 S. Second Ave., 793 S. Third Ave. and 485 W. Spruce St.

Frykholm said the new addition’s acreage could have enough space to double the amount of storage they offer.

“But of course we don’t want to get ahead of demand,” he said.

Carol Pope, manager of All Safe, said she is seeing more people moving into the area and more businesses of a wide variety looking for storage.

Security is a big issue for customers, Frykholm said, including cameras, fencing and a gate access point.

The new site will have cameras soon, he said.

Frykholm said they considered renovating the historical home on site, but its cost was too high.

All Safe is open 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays.
