When the gift shop started to overtake their bed and breakfast, Laura Segil decided it was time to open La Petite Maison Blanche.
Segil, who owns SeaCliff Gardens Bed & Breakfast with her husband, opened the gift shop in May.
La Petite Maison Blanche, at 213 E. Washington St., Ste. A, sells high-end gifts for women, children and pets, pantry goods, sweets and more.
Segil decided to sell these items after seeing all the beautiful things her mom had in the house growing up.
“She collected a lot,” Segil said. “I think I took on her love of collecting.”
Segil’s favorite items in the store are by a company called MacKenzie-Childs, which has a checkered theme.
“They have a whole theme of salt and pepper shakers that are really fun and whimsical,” she said.
According to Segil, what sets La Petite Maison Blanche apart from its competitors is its style.
“We’re just a little bit more French country, a little bit more feminine,” she said.
Segil said locally-made items, like honey, are the most popular among customers.
“The customers really like to come in and look around,” she said.
Segil picked Sequim as the location to open first the bed and breakfast with her husband and then the gift shop because she has always loved the Pacific Northwest.
La Petite Maison Blanche takes part in the First Friday Art Walk. Segil said she enjoys getting to know everyone.
“Especially meeting artists,” she said. “They are so much fun.”
The store sells some work from one of the artists, Mary B. Truly, who writes children’s books.
Segil grew up in Honolulu, then moved to California, then to Sequim in 2014.
“We wanted to relocate to have a more quiet lifestyle and more laid-back lifestyle,” she said.
Segil said her favorite thing about Sequim and owning a business here is the community.
“We’re all word of mouth, the businesses, so people have been telling her friends, which has been great,” she said.
La Petite Maison Blanche means the little white house in French. The inspiration for the name comes from Segil’s childhood summer cottage.
“It was red on the outside and white on the inside,” she said.
La Petite Maison Blanche is located at 213 E. Washington St., Ste. A., and is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday, and noon-4 p.m. on Sundays.
