Clallam County’s health inspections for September

Here are Clallam County Environmental Health Services’ restaurant/ food businesses and pool inspections for the month of September.

Inspectors visited 36 establishments, and found 28 locations with perfect scores. Six locations were reinspected. Eight locations were found with varying health and/or retail practice violations. Some establishments corrected measures during the initial inspection.

The following establishments received perfect scores:

• Frugals Mobile, 1520 E. Front St., Port Angeles

• Joyce General Store, 50883, W. Highway 112, Joyce

• Misty Valley Inn, Inc., 194894 U.S. Highway 101, Forks

• Sequim Kabob House, 173 W. Washington St., Sequim*

• Smokey Ridge BBQ, 2450 U.S. Highway 101, Port Angeles

• Tootsie’s, 537 W. Washington St., Sequim

• Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles

• Westend Taproom Tip and Sip, P.O. Box 52 Forks

The health department also inspected one pool, and the following establishment received a perfect score:

• Olympic Inn and Suites, 1510 E. Front St., Port Angeles*

The following establishments were determined to have a less-than perfect score:

• Baja Cantina, 825 W. Washington St., Sequim

(3-point deduction): improper methods used to thaw frozen steaks, so staff must thaw potentially hazardous foods using state-approved methods by Sept. 26. No reinspection required.

• Pacific Pizza, 870 S. Forks Ave., Forks *

(5-point deduction): cold holding temperatures must be 42-45 degrees. Inspector notes deep cleaning progress has been made since the last inspection, and after-hour cleaning added to routine. Certified Food Protection Manager credential must be completed by Oct. 31. Follow-up required.

• Subway at Evergreen 76, 490 N. Forks Ave., Forks

(5-point deduction): ham and roast beef read at 45 degrees and must be at 41 degrees or below, and staff must move meat to a refrigerator that can hold colder temperatures by Sept. 10. No follow-up required.

• Forks Outfitters, 950 S. Forks Ave., Forks

(8-point deduction): in-use utensils improperly stored between use; cutting board at produce sink was not clean; ice machine had accumulated grime inside/ Staff must replace cutting board and clean ice machine by Sept. 10. No follow-up required.

• Jose’s Famous Salsa, 126 E. Washington St., Sequim

(8-point deduction): employees not properly trained in food safety as it relates to their assigned duties, so they must be trained to learn to properly sanitize cleaned equipment and utensils before they are reused, through routine monitoring of solution temperature and exposure time for hot water sanitizing, and chemical concentration by Sept. 12. Sanitizer not functional at dishwasher but corrected during inspection. No follow-up required.

• Sequim Bento Teriyaki, 1243 W. Washington St.*

(8-point deduction): one staffer must obtain a food worker card by Sept. 24. Restaurant must also obtain a certified food protection manager certification, and ensure employees are properly sanitizing cleaned equipment and utensils before they are reused, through routine monitoring of solution temperature and exposure time for hot water sanitizing and chemical concentration by Dec. 29. No follow-up required.

• Carlsborg Station, 20 E. Carlsborg Road, Sequim

(10-point deduction): all hand wash stations shall be properly maintained with soap. Corrected during inspection. No follow-up required.

• Next Door Gastro Pub, 113 E. First St., Port Angeles

(35-point deduction): a food employee was observed cleaning their hands in a sink other than the hand wash sink; hand wash sink in kitchen not being used and blocked by garbage can and prep cart; hand wash sink at bar is being used as a dump station. By Sept. 12, staff must clean hands in a food prep or handwashing sink, access to kitchen sink must be cleared, and hand wash sink must only be used for washing hands only. No follow-up required.
