The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society is significantly closer to its goal of $1.4 million for the construction of its new dog kennel facility on Old Olympic Highway.

The third annual Meow-garitas and Mutts event brought in $121,000 — $100,000 from the dinner and auction, $11,000 from Subaru’s Share the Love promotion through Koenig Subaru and $10,000 from a matching grant from Nordstrom.

Nearly 400 people attended the event and enjoyed a Mexican dinner provided by 7 Cedars along with a silent and live auction.

The 2016 event is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, at the Vern Burton Center in Port Angeles.

Construction of a new dog kennel is under way and should be completed by early fall.

The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society has maintained an active presence in the community since 1947. The society shelters and cares for animals of all types. A private, nonprofit corporation, the society is financed primarily by private donations and gifts.
