Go local

This is the perfect time of year to plan your grocery shopping around the farmers market and make it a habit to shop locally first. The Sequim Farmers Market selection of produce, fresh herbs, and fruits is growing, but come early because all of this delicious, fresh food goes fast.

You can also find a weekly food staple on your grocery list in coolers around the market — including fresh eggs from DEKA Uniquities and Sativa Valley Essentials.

Don’t miss out on these eggs! Eggs from pastured chickens, fresh off the farm, have a superior nutrient profile. You can actually see the difference: when you crack open an egg, the first thing you notice is the hard shell, which comes from the chicken’s access to diverse foods as they forage around the farm, pecking and scratching in the soil to turn up seeds, sprouts and insects.

As you drop the egg into a bowl, the yolk is a rich yellow hemisphere, full of omega-3 and vitamins A and D.

On the Sativa Valley Essentials farm, you will find some very happy chickens. In addition to what the chickens forage from their 3-acre botanical farm, Jude and Sam provide a blend of natural grains from local Sequim farm, and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables from a local restaurant.

While the chickens provide wholesome eggs, they also are an essential workforce on the farm — assisting with pest management as they gobble up insects in the under-story of perennial herbs and fruits and enriching the soil with fertility as they peruse the gardens, ensuring a high quality crop.

Jam time

This weekend, the Summer Live Music series continues with Cool Jam playing from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Bring lawn chairs, make yourself comfortable and enjoy the show.

Cool Jam is a four-piece classic rock band and have a blast playing favorites from the 1960s and 70s. Band members include Rick Marschall (keyboard and vocals), Michael Gerber (lead guitar and vocals), Jack Smith (drums) and Duane Wolfe (bass). Dancing and toe tapping is encouraged.
