Keep our roadways safe

On Sept. 12, I was driving eastbound on the Old Olympic Highway when I was sprayed with gravel by an oncoming commercial gravel truck and semi trailer. It was obvious, as I drove through the barrage of gravel, that the trailer was heaped high, uncovered, overloaded. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to identify the truck and am now awaiting the estimate for a front windshield replacement.

All vehicles, and especially those driven by commercial operators should safely secure their loads. It could have been worse!

Republicans for Harris

On Aug. 13, more than 60,000 people reportedly joined a nationwide conference call with leaders of the newly-formed organization Republicans for Harris (npr.org, Aug. 15). Thirteen presenters, all of whom still consider themselves Republicans, expressed their dismay at the loss of the Republican Party they once loved and respected.

Since the Party has been usurped by Donald Trump and his MAGA devotees, Republicans for Harris are putting country above party in order to preserve American democracy and to reclaim their party. The group believes that the only way to save the Republican Party is to elect Kamala Harris and to then begin to rebuild what was once the great party of Lincoln.

Noteworthy in this movement is staunch conservative former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter, former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney, who recently endorsed Harris for President. In a public statement made on Sept. 6, Mr. Cheney said: “In our nation’s 248 year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump.” (“Dick Cheney says he will vote for Harris,” npr.org, Sept. 7))

Liz Cheney, on Sept. 4 at an event at the Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy in North Carolina, acknowledged her father’s endorsement of Kamala Harris by stating, “As a conservative and someone who believes in and cares deeply about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this. And because of the danger that Donald Trump poses — not only am I not voting for Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.” (dukechronicle.com, time.com)
