The WSU Clallam County Extension’s Gleaning Program kicks off in early June with kick-off events at local libraries.
Learn how to become a Clallam Gleaner — harvesting neighbors’ extra fruits and vegetables, both for donations to local organizations and for personal use — from 6-7 p.m. Monday, June 4, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.
Other kick-off events are set for 6-7 p.m. June 5 at the Port Angeles Library and 4-5 p.m. June 6 at the Forks Library.
“We have an active group of volunteers that harvest from local gardens and farms, to donate to the food banks as well as fill their own fridge,” AmeriCorps intern/WSU Gleaning Coordinator Sharah Truett says.
Events will be a 1940s-themed tea party with snacks and refreshment and information about the gleaning program. Participants can bring a light tea party snack to share if they would like, and are welcome to dress in a 1940s-themed costume. The 1940s theme was selected because it was the last decade gleaning was widespread in the U.S.
