With events that may be of particular interest to those new to the Northwest or to bird watching, the Dungeness River Nature Center has remaining openings in three talks during its nearly sold-out BirdFest weekend, April 13-16.
Still available are spots in “Beginning Birding Basics,” “Hummingbirds,” and “Corvids” (ravens, crows and jays). All three talks will be held in the River Center’s Rainshadow Hall at 1943 West Hendrickson Road.
From 10 a.m.-noon on Sunday, April 16, raptors will be at the new River Center for the first time for a “Meet and Greet” with Discovery Bay Wild Bird Rescue. The center’s recovery team will discuss their work and bring live birds rescued and rehabilitated but unable to be released back into the wild. Cost is $25.
“Beginning Birding Basics,” is 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday, April 15. Taught by longtime River Center Director Powell Jones, participants will learn the best local places to find different kinds of birds, strategies for identification, how to choose binoculars and/or scopes, how to determine the best and least expensive optics, and print and digital resources. Learn how to identify 20 birds common to the Pacific Northwest. Cost is $20.
See slides up on the big screen in Rainshadow Hall and learn all about hummingbirds from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 14, and corvids from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 15; cost is $20 each.
Participants must register online at OlympicBirdFest.org.
Hurricane Coffee at the River will be open for BirdFest with longer hours all weekend.
