Activities about for B&G Club summer campers

Around the Club

Our teens have been cutting loose at the club with dance lessons. Rosalynn Rees led them in several styles of dance and they had a blast. It was off to the lake for them, in an earned field trip, the first time this summer for many.

Drama Club had a visit from Helen who played her accordion for the kids, Cooking Club made potato chip casserole, and the Judo and Running Club kids continue to meet weekly and perfect their hobby.

It was a pretty regular week at the club until Friday when all things lavender happened. The club loves to welcome visitors to the area and be a part of festivities. You found us parking cars at our clubhouse as a fundraiser for our teens and their aspirations to remodel their room.

Our staff and volunteers were driving the in-city shuttle bus all weekend long, sharing “Big Blue” with visitors from all over. They enjoyed the hospitality and speaking with our teen docent riding the bus. You probably saw us running the “Festival Fun For Kids” at the street fair.

We had Anytime Fitness out every morning working out with the kids, we had quick golf, puzzle challenges, scavenger hunts and crafts. Local children and visitors all participated in the fun.

Morning Camp

It was off to the Puget Sound Naval Museum this week. Our kids had a great time exploring the life of a sailor with a visit through an exhibit replicating life on board an aircraft carrier.

Members got to see how they slept and ate on a ship. The kids enjoyed the temporary exhibit “When Baseball Went to War” with history of Navy baseball and old uniforms they could try on. They trip made a lunch at Kitsap Park before heading home.

Locally, the kids made the short trip to Dungeness Valley Creamery for a tour with the owners. They saw the cow milking process but were enamored with all the Jersey calves and enjoyed petting the babies.

In the club members participated in a literacy game show answering trivia questions based on popular books and math equations. The event concluded with 60 books distributed to the participants to keep, read and eventually do a story retell to the members of the club.

Brain Gain

This week in Brain Gain members discovered China.

They learned about the history behind China, what they eat, traditions that they have and how big the world really is. The members got to experiment with rice this week and watch it dance; members created their own Chinese fans, Chinese slat books and learned about Chinese calligraphy.

They were able to see a Chinese instrument called an Erhu along with other instruments from around the world brought in by one of our fantastic volunteers. The week culminated with a Lego version of the Great Wall of China.

Junior Rangers

The Junior Rangers went up the mountain to Hurricane Ridge, which stands tall behind our Port Angeles Club every day.

Before setting out on their hike, young rangers started in the visitors center with park rangers and watched a video on how the Olympic Mountains formed and about the plant and animal life indigenous to the area.

Rangers hit the trail for a two-mile hike stopping for lunch at the top. They saw goats on the hike but the bear poop sighting seemed to be the most exciting to the young hikers.
