Concerts planned at library

As part of the North Olympic Library System’s annual Summertime Music! Outdoor Concert Series, Geoffrey Castle will be performing at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, on the outdoor stage behind the library. Castle will play his electric six-string violin. At 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, the library will host Joy in Mudville.

Quilcene welcomes piano trio

Concerts in the Barn welcomes the Aletheia Piano Trio at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, for the second of five free weekends of chamber music at Alan Iglitzin’s historical barn in Quilcene. Comprised of violinist Francesca de Pasquale, cellist Juliette Herlin, and pianist Fei-Fei Dong, the trio formed in 2013 at the Juilliard School. The trio has performed at Lincoln Center in New York and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Artists host open house

Local artist Susan Martin Spar hosts an Open Studio event with guest artist Brandy Agun of Woodinville from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 19-20, at Spar’s studio, 72 Derrick Road, Port Angeles. Both artists attended Georgetown Atelier in Seattle together. A video about the Open Studio can be viewed at www.susanspar.com/videos-blog. Both artists will be showing and selling a variety of their originals as well as prints and cards, and demonstrating their skills on both days of the show. A drawing for a free painting will be held; the winner need not be present to win.

Book talk set for ‘The Painter’

Peter Heller’s “The Painter” is the book up for discussion at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. Copies of this book are available in regular print, large print, audio book on CD, audio e-book, and downloadable e-book. Winery hosts famed jazz vocalist, Peninsula College vocalists

Renowned jazz singer Greta Matassa will perform with Peninsula College Vocal Jazz soloists Brandi Larson, Robbin Eaves, Brittney Sophie and Alexis Haman at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at Olympic Cellars Winery. Matassa has been voted “Northwest Vocalist of the Year” by Earshot Jazz seven times in 15 years. She was voted Vocalist of the Year in 2014 and honored with a lifetime achievement award and inducted into the Earshot Jazz Hall of Fame in 2014. The event is sponsored by Olympic Cellars Winery. Admission is free, but donations are requested and will benefit the Peninsula College Foundation Vocal Jazz Fund. Film focuses on becoming Mars scientists

As part of the Documentary Nights! film series, a free screening of “The Mars Generation” will be shown at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the Sequim Library. The film follows a group of trainees, ages 15-18, at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center as they prepare to become the engineers, astrophysicists and astronauts of tomorrow. This 2017 film is rated TV-PG and is 1 hour 37 minutes in length.

PT plans uptown festival

Port Townsend will have its 27th Annual Uptown Street Fair from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, on Lawrence and Tyler streets uptown. Find local and new Northwest artists and craftsmen, the farmers market, music all day, funky parade at 2 p.m., food and children’s art activities. At 10 a.m. there will be a family town portrait taken at the bell tower on Jefferson and Tyler streets. Also there will be a beer garden and dancing, with the Port Townsend Summer Band at 11 a.m. For more information, see www.port townsendartsguild.org.

VFW sets dinner for Thursday

VFW Post 4760, 169 E. Washington St., Sequim, will have a dinner and music from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17. The menu includes meatloaf with gravy, macaroni and cheese and salad. The dinner is $10 and is open to the public.
