Music in the Park finale to feature Black Diamond Junction

Black Diamond Junction caps the 2021 Music in the Park series with a performance at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, at the James Center for the Performing Arts’ band shell, 350 N. Blake Ave.

Attendees are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the free event.

Voted Olympic Peninsula’s “Best Live Band” and “Best Live Performer” 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, Black Diamond Junction brings a high-energy show of classic hits from 1960s to the 1990s.

Concessions will be available on-site from The Lefties Beer Barrel and Sequim Valley Lion’s hot dogs.

The month-long Music in the Park features different musical acts at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays at the James Center adjacent to Carrie Blake Community Park. Events are sponsored by KSQM 91.5 FM, a listener supported, commercial-free community radio.

Woodturners to meet on Zoom

The Strait Turners Woodturning Club meets at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 31, on Zoom.

The group’s presenter this month is Phillip Greenwood from England, who has been turning since 1986. He will be showing attendees how to make a “Finial Trinket Box.”

The club, established in 2016, generally meets the last Tuesday of the month at the Gardiner Community Center; club members say they do not have a date yet for when they will resume in-person meetings.

Local artists contribute to ‘Asian Influences’

“Asian Influences,” with dozens of Asian-inspired art pieces from Sequim, Port Angeles and Jefferson county artists, is on display through September in the new walk-by exhibit at Tyler and Lawrence streets, Port Townsend, organized by the North Peninsula chapter of the Surface Design Association.

Scarves dyed with indigo, shibori-stitched jackets, origami-embellished note cards, cane-wrapped stones, Furoshiki wrapping cloths, Japanese rice bags, dolls, quilts and beaded jewelry are examples of what 13 artists from Jefferson and Clallam counties have created. Many pieces are for sale, exhibit organizers note.

Sequim artists include Linda Carlson, Liisa Fagerlund and Steffany Neuschaefer.

Members meet monthly, with meetings rotated between Port Townsend, Sequim and Port Angeles. The next meeting is Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. at A Stitch in Time Quilt Shoppe, Sequim. Guests are welcome.

Auditions set for PA Players’ ‘Miss Bennett’

Auditions for the Port Angeles Players’ Holiday Season offering, “Miss Bennett — Christmas at Pemberly” by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon, are set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at the PA Playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd. Performances will be Dec. 3-19.

All the speaking roles are for people age 16-35. There are roles for three men and five women. Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to try out.

Tryouts will be inside the playhouse; masks will be required.

Hear authors at PAFAC event

Olympic Peninsula Authors will feature six local writers reading short stories for a 90-minute program that coincides with a new art exhibit at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, in the courtyard at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Writers reading will include Jon Eekhoff, Heidi Hansen, Melee McGuire, Terry Moore, Linda B. Myers, Beth Pratt and Stephen Workman.

Rosenthal’s art on display at Harbor Art Gallery

Abstract and jewelry artist Christina Rosenthal will exhibit her new group of abstract paintings at the Harbor Art Gallery next month.

The exhibit, titled “Trajectories,” will be in the Featured Artist Room at the gallery, 114 N. Laurel St., Port Angeles, during September and October.

The gallery’s operating hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday. Meet the artist on Sept. 3, 8, 9, 10 and 11 during operating hours., and

during the Port Angeles Art Walk from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11.

Final weekend set for Concerts in the Barn

Concerts in the Barn presents its last weekend of music of the 2021 chamber music season on Saturday, Aug. 28, and Sunday, Aug. 29, with performances from the Fulton Street Chamber Players — violinist Cordula Merks, Rachel Swerdlow on viola and Walter Gray on cello — with pianist George Lopez, at the historic barn at 7360 Center Road, Quilcene.

The concerts are free to the public, but to ensure COVID guidelines are maintained, all concertgoers must reserve their place in the barn or on the lawn in advance through Brown Paper Tickets (go to concertsinthebarn.org and select “Free Tickets Required”). Patrons who are unvaccinated or who prefer outside seating are welcome to sit on the lawn; outside guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets for seating.

The farm opens to visitors at 11 a.m. each concert day. At 1 p.m., the barn doors open so vaccinated patrons can reserve their seats, either on comfortable pews or hay bales in the loft.

The Fulton Street Chamber Players will perform Ken Benshoof’s “Tangents and Detours for cello and piano,” Robert Schumann’s “Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 47” and Ernö Dohnányi’s “Serenade in C major, Op. 10.”

PT Film Festival retains outdoor screenings

Organizers with the Port Townsend Film Festival have cancel the eight planned indoor screenings but plans remain to host the traditional Outdoor Cinema on Taylor Street as a free community event with screenings Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Sept. 24-26, 2021.

Festival planners announced the publication of a full guide of more than 80 films featured as official selections in the 22nd-annual festival. The list of films with synopses and trailers is available at ptfilmfest.com.
