Whaling disaster is novel’s theme

“In the Heart of the Sea” by Nathaniel Philbrick will be discussed at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. The novel is about a tragic 1820s whaling voyage whose central disaster was the violent encounter with a sperm whale, which inspired the climactic scene in Melville’s “Moby Dick.”

Copies are available in various formats including regular print, audio book on CD, large print, audio e-book, audio book on CD, large print, and e-book; they can be requested online by visiting the library catalog at www.nols.org. All are welcome to drop in and participate.

Open mic readings planned in Sequim

Fourth Friday Readings, sponsored by Writers on the Spit, will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at The Lodge, 660 Evergreen Farm Way, Sequim.

There will be 5-minute open mic readings; bring poems, short-short stories or memoir/novel snippets.

Ready, set, write!

The Spontaneous Writing group will meet from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. All writers are welcome, regardless of experience. Bring paper and pen (no electronic devices, please). Prompts are provided. Participants write for 10 minutes, then read what they write. This is not a critique group; it’s a group to inspire your writing. The group meets every third Monday and is hosted by Ruth Marcus.

Tim Wheeler’s new book, “News From Rain Shadow Country,” is available at Sequim Museum &Arts, 175 W. Cedar St. Proceeds from sales go back to the museum.

Chamber concerts set in Port Townsend

The Olympic Music Festival in Port Townsend presents the first two performances of the Olympic Chamber Music Fellowship at 2 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 12-13, at Fort Worden’s Wheeler Theater. The Saturday concert features works by Mozart while the Sunday performance is “Hungarian Fantasies” focusing on the works of Bela Bartok.
