‘Focus On’ series spotlights coyotes

The next “Focus On” series sees Powell Jones, Dungeness River Audubon Center Director, talk about coyotes from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Dec. 21, at the center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

“Revered for their boisterous howls, intelligence, and ability to adapt to human encroachment coyotes have found themselves in the middle of an image crisis,” event organizers say. “ Come learn about their image transformation and explore their place in ecosystems and our changing world.”

Cost is $5 for members, $10 for non-members.

Varner’s piece picked for QuiltWeek competition

Sequim artist Marla Varner saw her quilt “At the Junction” earn a spot in the American Quilter’s Society’s AQS QuiltWeek-Daytona Beach event in early 2020.

AQS QuiltWeek-Daytona Beach, set for Feb. 26-29, will feature 422 quilts with entries from 35 states and 13 countries. Hundreds of quilters compete for $54,000 in cash awards.

Varner’s “At the Junction” took fourth place overall at the AQS QuiltWeek-Fall Paducah event in Paducah, Ky., in September.

Crystal bowl singing session on tap

Therapeutic Arts Center hosts Winter Solstice Sound Journey, a time of crystal singing bowls and chanting, from 2-3:15 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 261043 US Highway 101. Paschal sets book signing at Harbor Art Gallery

Barb Paschal, an author and watercolorist painter, will sign books from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Harbor Art Gallery, 114 North Laurel St., Port Angeles.

Paschal has written and painted illustrations for two self-published children’s books that combined have 15 short stories and 150 watercolor paintings. The tales of giraffes, ladybugs, puppies, kids, mountains, trees, rivers and more were written to help children learn to enjoy and improve their ability to read. She wrote “Stories for Stampy” and “Stampy and Friends” to help a child she volunteers with at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club.

Paschal is a retired physical therapist who has been a health and balance community educator on the Olympic Peninsula for 17 years. She also volunteers in a second grade classroom at Franklin Elementary in Port Angeles, teaching some beginning watercolor techniques.

Get tickets now for a cappella concert at PC

Tickets are now on sale for a special joint concert featuring The Filharmonic, a world-renowned a cappella group.

The Filharmonic, who were featured in NBC’s hit musical competition “The Sing-Off,” and who appeared in the motion picture “Pitch Perfect 2,” will take the stage at the Port Angeles High School auditorium at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10.

Tickets purchased prior to Dec. 25 are $20. The cost after Dec. 26 is $25 and $30 at the door. Advance tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com by searching “Filharmonic.” The show is underwritten by the ASC, so current Peninsula College students and current PAHS choir students receive free admission.

The concert is a joint effort between the Peninsula College Associated Student Council and the Port Angeles High School choir.
