Toastmasters to host two contests in one night
More than seven accomplished speakers in the Skwim Toastmasters Club will compete in two different speech contests from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23. The public is invited to attend this virtual meeting on Zoom (skwimtm.org) or in person at the KSQM 91.5 FM broadcasting office, 609 W. Washington St.
The first contest is the “Tall Tales” contest. Contestants present a speech with an improbable theme or plot and is highly exaggerated. The second contest is “International Speech,” where contestants present a talk intended to up-lift, amuse, and inspire the audience.
“We’re exploring fun ways to stretch our speaking skills,” said Lindy MacLaine, Skwim’s chief judge for the contest. “Contests accelerate our learning … and provide a lot of fun for the audience.”
Winners from both contests will go on to the area contest in February. Winners at that level will go on to the Division contest taking place in March.
The Sequim club meets every Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the KSQM 91.5 office, 609 W. Washington St. The club also meets on Zoom. Join through the link on the club’s website home page at skwimtm.org.

Art course includes guided tour of work
How artists, including fiber artists, use color is what participants in the six-week Northwind Art “Fundamentals of Art Part 2” course will review at their first session Monday, Feb. 5.
With instructor Anne Pfeiffer, a Port Angeles artist, they will tour “Burst of Color,” an 80-piece exhibit by 37 members of Peninsula Fiber Artists at Northwind Art’s Jeanette Best Gallery at 701 Water St., Port Townsend.
Pfeiffer describes “Burst of Color” as “a perfect intro to the Part 2 Fundamentals course that goes into composition in depth — contrast, movement, repetition and pattern, harmony, depth, balance — and a good way to summarize the Part 1 course, which covered color, line, value, texture, shape and form.”
Registration is still open to those 18 and older for Part 2, for which Part 1 is not a prerequisite. Cost is $180. Most materials are provided. For more information, visit tinyurl.com/SEQnwart.
