Open mic set, painting class open, fiddlers offer session and more.

Open mic readings planned

Writers on the Spit announces an entire evening of open mic readings at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22. Everyone is invited to this free event in the media room at The Lodge, 660 Evergreen Farm Way in Sequim. The 5-minute open-mic readings showcase diverse writing talent — poetry, short-short stories and memoir excerpts. Guidelines are available from Rmarcus@olypen.com.

Learn to paint landscapes

Come join a house painting party from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, to learn how to paint landscapes with Lynn Ruth. If you have every wanted to paint a picture before, then this is an easy introduction to this art and you will come away with an awesome painting.  All supplies provided. Fee applies. PT artist at Studium Generale

Northwest native Counsel Langley will be the focus of Eye Contact, a solo exhibition at Peninsula College’s PUB Gallery of Art in the Pirate Union Building, Jan. 19-Feb. 25. Her paintings have been widely exhibited regionally and nationally. Langley also will be the featured presenter at the Feb. 25 Studium Generale presentation in Peninsula College’s Little Theater, beginning at 12:35 p.m. This will be followed by an artist’s reception at 1:30 p.m. in the PUB Gallery of Art in PC’s Pirate Union Building. The event is free and open to the public.

Cherokee chief in film

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. in Peninsula College’s Maier Performance Hall, the 2013 feature film “The Cherokee Word for Water” will be screened. This movie tells the story of Wilma Mankiller, the first modern female chief of the Cherokee Nation. The movie also will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the Jamestown S’Klallam Community Center. More information about the film also can be found at its website, www.cw4w.com.

Play fiddle by ear

Learn to play old-time fiddle tunes by ear from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, in the Sequim Library meeting room, 630 N. Sequim Ave. The free session, the first of a series, is intended for those 21 and under with one to two years playing a melody instrument, but all are welcome to listen or play back-up with acoustic instruments. Old-time is traditional music often learned by ear rather than from sheet music. Much of it is dance music.

The series is presented by District 15 of the Washington Old-time Fiddlers Association. Donations are welcome. For more information, call 477-9373.

Sequim Arts reorganizes

The first official general meeting of Olympic Peninsula Arts Association (formerly Sequim Arts) will be Thursday, Jan. 28, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Parish Hall, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

The social time starts at 9:30 a.m. and the business meeting at 10 a.m. The public always is welcome. Linda Stadtmiller, past president of Sequim Arts, will be the special presenter for January, kicking off the new year with a presentation on to how to make the best use of color by staying within a warm or cool color palette.

Poetry deadline is Friday

The 2016 Rainshadow Poetry Competition is accepting works from poets — both adults and youths — in Clallam and Jefferson counties, with winning poems to be published in the Second Annual Rainshadow Poetry Anthology.
