Toastmasters set open house
With the theme “Boost Your Confidence, Find Your Voice in 2019,” the Skwim Toastmasters host an open house from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the club’s usual location, The Gathering Place in Sunland at 135 Fairway Dr.
Club Past President Richard Proctor will speak about his journey overcoming a crippling fear of being in front of people. One of the club’s newer members, Gigi Marunde, will speak about “Finding Your Voice in Morning Thought.” Craig Barron, Club Sargeant at Arms, will also speak. Members and guests will enjoy a regular Toastmasters meeting including prepared speeches, Table Topics (impromptu speeches) and evaluations.
Admission is free, though registration is requested at SkwimTM.eventbrite.com because of to space limitations.

Elks host Caribe Steel Band, Cool Jam Band
The Sequim Elks Lodge’s Concert & Dance series continues this month with a pair of events in late January at the Elks’ lodge at 143 Port Williams Road.
At 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, the lodge welcomes Caribe Steel Band, a group that blends “lively instrumental arrangements featuring Caribbean Steel pans and crowd-pleasing vocals” with the sounds of the Caribbean: reggae, calypso, soca, samba and even some favorite pop tunes. Band members include Angie Tabor, John Sanders, and Tor Brandes. Up in front of stage seating available.
Starting at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, the Cool Jam Band brings 1960s and 1970s classic rock to the Elks stage and dance floor. Band members include Mike Gerber, Jack Smith, Karl Frickes and Rick Marschall.

Jazz in spotlight at annual dinner-dance
Sequim High School’s annual Jazz Dinner Dance is set for 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave.
The event features the SHS Jazz Band and the Stardust Big Band. Music starts at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $25 per person, $45 per couple.

Woodturners group set meeting
Strait Turners, a local woodturners group, invites community members to attend their next meeting set for 12:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road. The presenter is group members Lynn Taylor of Port Townsend, who will demonstrate bowl creation from selecting and preparing the wood to the final product.
Turners of all levels are welcome, including those who want to learn about the hobby.
