Local artists’ banners fill walk-by exhibit

Wax prints, sari silk, shibori, raw-edge applique and painting are among the techniques and materials on display now in the new Peninsula Fiber Artists exhibit at 675 Tyler St. in uptown Port Townsend.

Exhibit curator Debra E. Olson, a Port Townsend artist, specified only one criteria to her colleagues: size. Submissions were to be 60 inches long and between 16-18 inches wide. Six colleagues joined her in designing banners — some quilted, some almost translucent, that can be seen 24/7 in the walk-by exhibit open through July.

Other participating artists include Liisa Fagerlund and Lynn Gilles of Sequim, Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry, Sue Gale and Gail Haines of Port Townsend, and Erica Iseminger of Chimacum.

Originally a chapter of the international Surface Design Association, Peninsula Fiber Artists came together in 2013 to serve artists and craftspeople on the Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas. The group welcomes fiber artists from anywhere and meets the second Wednesday of each month, with sessions alternating between the Gardiner Community Center in Sequim and the Northwind Art space at Fort Worden, Port Townsend.
