Magic show set at peninsula libraries

Jeff Evans makes his return to the North Olympic Library System with his Out of this World Magic Show on Saturday, June 22. Evans will perform at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 10:30 a.m., and again at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 2 p.m.

A summer reading favorite, Evans looks to make events fun and unforgettable with interactive magic. A full-time entertainer and presenter since 1997, he performs 250-plus shows a year, encouraging youths to learn and stimulate their imagination with books.

The theme for the 2019 Summer Reading Program, which runs through Aug. 17, is “A Universe of Stories.”

Cruz comes to Sequim

Chris Cruz, southern California-based singer-songwriter, takes the state at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., on Saturday, June 22. Cruz maintains a busy performance schedule including solo, duo, combo and full band performances in addition to hosting the Beach Hut Deli Open Mic in Huntington Beach, Calif. Summer art fest set in Port Angeles

The Summer Solstice Art Festival, a free arts and culture event hosted at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd., is set for noon-5 p.m. on Friday, June 21, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 22.

The festival celebrates installation of four new artworks in Webster’s Woods Sculpture Park, as well as offers hands-on art opportunities, artist demonstrations, an outdoor Makers’ Market and a schedule of educational talks and tours.

Concert set at Trinity United

The internationally known Seattle Girls Choir’s top group, Prime Voci, will present a concert at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

“Unsung Voices: 1,000 Years of Female Composers” is the concert’s theme. All the music was composed by women, ranging from liturgical pieces by Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) to the operatic music of the Seattle area’s Carol Sams.

The concert at the church is free; an offering will be taken to benefit the choir’s programs.

The choir has toured across North America and performed at major festivals and concerts throughout Europe. Seattle Girls Choir has six choir levels, nearly 200 singers enrolled and a staff of 12, including artistic director Jacob Winkler.

Dr. Jerome Wright, Trinity’s choral director and conductor of the Peninsula Singers, was the Seattle Girls Choir’s founder and served as its artistic director until his retirement a decade ago.

Ham radio event on tap at Lincoln Park

The Clallam County Amateur Radio Club and the Clallam County Amateur Radio Emergency Service are providing the community an opportunity to try out Amateur Radio — also known as ham radio — with a day of games, food, fun and special activities for youth and adults alike at the Clallam County Fairgrounds’ Lincoln Park in Port Angeles.

The Clallam County Amateur Radio’s 54th Emergency Communications Field Day event is set for Saturday, June 22, starting at 11 a.m. and operating through the night until 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 23. Youth activities are limited to 11 a.m.-4:30 pm. on June 22.

Anyone wanting to will have a chance to talk on the radio to other local, national and foreign amateur radio operators, see operational displays of different types of emergency radio gear and participate in events emphasizing family and personal preparedness. Interested area Scout troops will be working toward earning their radio merit badges.

Toastmasters set 13th birthday event

Sequim’s Toastmasters Club invites the public to attend its 13th birthday potluck party from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, at “The Gathering Place” in Sunland, 135 Fairway Drive.

Any charter members able to attend the event are especially invited to be the club’s celebrated guests. The meeting will focus on positive experiences of growth and community the club has provided over time. The club’s new slate of officers will be installed, and members recognized.

Attending the meeting is free; a potluck item is a welcome contribution, Toastmasters members say.

Book club peers in the ‘Magic Shop’

The Novel Conversations Book Discussion Group meets to explore “Into the Magic Shop” by James R. Doty at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

To participate, read the book and attend the discussion; no reservations are needed and drop-ins are welcome.

With an alcoholic father and a depressed mother, Doty’s life was at a dead end when, he wandered into a magic shop looking for a plastic thumb. Instead he met Ruth, who taught him a series of exercises to ease his own suffering and manifest his greatest desires. The book has been called ”part memoir, part science, part inspiration and part practical instruction.”

Weavils set Sequim concert, dance

Seattle-based band The Weavils come to Sequim for a concert and dance at 6 p.m. Friday, June 28, at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road.

A staple at festivals, pubs, weddings and events throughout the Northwest for nearly 20 years, The Weavils mix energetic music and humor. Band members describe their music as Americana, ranging from rapid fire bluegrass tunes to the music of old-time string bands hailing from
