OTA seeks 10-minute play scripts for New Works Showcase
Olympic Theatre Arts is in search of writers to submit original scripts for 10-minute plays with the theme of “resilience.” The community theatre and performing arts center is planning to produce up to five short plays to take the stage — possibly for in-person plays — in July 2021.
“Each selected writer will have the chance to immerse themselves in the theatrical process while bringing their works to life,” OTA representatives said last week. Creating new works stimulates community creativity and provides essential avenues for community engagement. OTA’s New Works Showcase will be an opportunity not only for entertainment, they said, but for community inspiration and education as well.
The script deadline is Thursday, April 1. Visit OlympicTheatreArts.org for showcase guidelines, application and script writing template.
Woodturners to meet
The Strait Turners woodturning club meets at noon on the last Tuesday of each month. The club now meets on Zoom, but when club members begin meeting again in person — no date has been announced — they meet at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.
Community members are invited to expand their knowledge of woodturning.
This month club president Tracy McCallum, a woodturner since 2010, will demonstrate use of carbide-tipped tools.

Fourth Friday Readings to resume … on Zoom
The Fourth Friday Readings group will host meetings once again, this time virtually, as community members join to read their written works.
The next meeting is at 6 p.m. Friday, March 26.
Individual readings are five minutes or less. They may be poetry, excerpts from books, essays, memoir, and other non-fiction. The program lasts about two hours. Interested parties can simply listen in to hear the sounds of community members or read aloud a work of their own.
To be included, send an email to olypenauthors@olypen.com; include whether you want to read or listen in. Participants will be sent the link for the event.
The open-mic Fourth Friday Readings took place monthly for nearly nine years prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The event is free, and it begins at 6 p.m. on Friday 26 of March.
