Matheny, ensemble

to play at college

Dmitri Matheny, winner of NW Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year honors in this year’s Seattle Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Awards, brings his musical gifts to the Olympic Peninsula at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21, at Peninsula College’s Maier Performance Hall, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

An evening of jazz, blues, and bossa nova will be on tap, featuring classics by Duke Ellington and Richard Rodgers, modern classics by Chris Cornell, Burt Bacharach and Herbie Hancock, and fresh originals by Matheny, Dr. David Jones and the David P. Jones Quartet. The ensemble features jazz musicians from many different groups around the region: Kevin MacCartney (tenor sax, flute), David Jones (piano), Ted Enderle (bass) and Terry Smith (drums).

Fourth Friday readings

The next session of Fourth Friday Readings is at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, in the media room at the The Lodge, 660 Evergreen Farm Way. Sponsored by Writers on the Spit, the meeting features Sarah Sheppard. The session includes a 5-minute open mic reading. Bring poems, short-short stories or memoir/novel snippets. Sign up in advance.

Library talk looks at ‘The Danish Girl’

“The Danish Girl” by David Ebershoff is the book up for discussion at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. The debut novel from Ebershoff offers the fictionalized telling of the first man to surgically become a woman. The novel is set in the 1920s and 1930s of Europe and California, where painters Einar Wegener and his wife, Greta, struggle to understand and cope with the emotional and physical impact of Einar’s change into Lili. Copies of “The Danish Girl” are available in various formats including regular print, and downloadable e-book and e-audiobook. Round Trip plays VFW

Bringing rock and roll, country and oldies to the stage, Round Trip plays the Sequim VFW Post 4760, 169 E. Washington St. from 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28. The show is open to the public.

NOLS to take part in ‘Big Library Read’

The North Olympic Library System will take part in OverDrive’s Big Library Read program as NOLS patrons will have unlimited downloadable access to Chelsea Sedoti’s debut novel, “The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett,” through Oct. 26.
