Oktoberfest set at the Elks

Silverdale’s Hometown “Oompah” Band takes the spotlight at the Oktoberfest 2019 Concert & Dance set for 6-8:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road.

Enjoy German- and European-style polkas, waltzes and other dance steps. Cost is $10 and food includes bratwurst, sauerkraut and hot potato salad. Oktoberfest attire is encouraged.

Photo prof in spotlight at PC’s Studium Generale

Using a camera as a painting tool, award-winning photographer and Peninsula College Multimedia Professor Marina Shipova will take guests on a photographic exploration, painting new uncharted worlds and unearthing untold stories, at her Studium Generale presentation set for 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, at Peninsula College’s Little Theater, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd, Port Angeles.

Shipova won Best of Show for her image “Message in a Bottle,” and Photoshop World Guru for “The Lady of the Lake,” at the Photoshop World Conference in Las Vegas in August 2019. Born and raised in Russia, Shipova said she was from a generation of artists who emerged through the influences of Marc Chagall and Ilya Glazunov.

The event is free and open to the public, with a reception immediately following. Visitors are invited to view Shipova’s work on display in the PUB Gallery of Art through the end of October. For more information, email Dr. Kate Reavey at kreavey@pencol.edu.

Author Guterson set to speak at Peninsula College

Award-winning writer David Guterson discusses his newest creation, a book-length poem titled “Turn Around Time: A Walking Poem for the Pacific Northwest,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, in Maier Hall on the Peninsula College campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd, Port Angeles.

The event is free and open to the public, and sponsored by the Foothills Writers Series and Port Book and News.

Guterson is the author of “Snow Falling on Cedars,” which won the PEN/Faulkner and the American Booksellers Association Book of the Year Award. It has sold more than four million copies and was adapted as a major motion picture.

He is the author of several other novels: “East of the Mountains”; “Our Lady of the Forest”; ”The Other,” and Ed King. He is also the author of two story collections. “Turn Around Time” was published this September by Mountaineers Books.

The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Guterson lives on Bainbridge Island with his wife Robin; they have five children.

Help wanted in honoring veterans with song

The Olympic Peninsula Men’s Chorus is inviting all interested singers to join the group, to learn three patriotic songs and join the chorus in singing at the Veteran’s Day event at the U.S. Coast Guard base in Port Angeles on Monday, Nov. 11.

Rehearsals run Tuesday nights starting at 6:30 p.m. from Oct. 1-Nov. 5 at the Sunland Golf and Country Club clubhouse, 109 Hilltop Dr. The group will devote the first hour of rehearsals to the songs. All interested singers are welcome.

Dance classes offered

Na Hula ‘O Wahine ‘Ilikea is offering a series of four lessons as an introduction to the beautiful dance of the islands.

Classes are 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Oct. 16-Nov. 6, at the Fifth Avenue, 500 W. Hendrickson Road.

Photo Walk set for Oct. 5

Marina Shipova, Peninsula College’s Multimedia Professor, was recently picked to lead a Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, in Port Angeles. The walk begins at Port Angeles City Pier tower and finishes at The Crab House Restaurant.

Photo Walks are created by Walk Leaders in cities all over the world. Walkers meet up at a pre-designated location to spend a few hours socializing, capturing images, and sharing with like-minded people.

At the end of the Photo Walk, most groups convene at local restaurants or taverns to share their images and experiences over food.

Photo walkers will be able to upload their favorite picture to a Photo Walk contest for a chance to win prizes. A Grand Prize winner and 10 finalists to be selected by Scott Kelby.

Jewelry designer McLain at Second Saturday Art Walk

Gail McLain, featured artist for the month of October at the Harbor Art Gallery, 114 N. Laurel St., Port Angeles. She will be at the gallery during the Second Saturday Art Walk on Oct. 12 to speak with art walk participants.

McLain grew up south of Seattle. After graduating from the University of Washington with a major in graphic design, she worked for The Boeing Company as a production illustrator.

She and her husband Scott are longtime Sequim residents, along with their dog and horse.

Her favored mediums for expression are acrylic and colored pencil painting, lost wax bronze sculpting, and jewelry design and crafting. She has exhibited art work many times in Clallam County, Seattle and Virginia.
