Chen in spotlight for OMF season’s final show

The Olympic Music Festival presents violinist Ray Chen and pianist/OMF Artistic Director Julio Elizalde to close out the 2019 OMF Season, Sept. 7-8, with a program titled “Art of the Violin II.”

Tickets ($33-$40, $20-$25 for students) are sold out for the Sept. 7 show but are still available for Sunday, Sept. 8, set for 2 p.m. at Fort Worden’s Wheeler Theater. Tickets are available online at olympicmusicfestival.org or on Brown Paper Tickets at 800-838-3006.

Chen, winner of the Yehudi Menuhin (2008) and Queen Elizabeth (2009) competitions, joins Elizalde for a program that continues the theme from the OMF Opening Celebration—repertoire for violin and piano. The program is the same both days and ranges from the lyricism of Grieg’s “Violin Sonata No. 2” to Bach’s “Chaconne in D minor” for solo violin.

Square dancing for beginners

The Rhody O’s Square Dance Club is offering beginning square dance lessons starting Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road. All are invited to a free ice cream social and introductory dance lesson.

Lessons are held each Thursday evening through the autumn and winter, with graduation in late spring. There is no experience necessary; the program is designed for those who have never square danced in their lives (or maybe years ago) but wished they had.

Attire is informal: The Rhody O’s is an informal group whose members dance in shorts and jeans and sometimes their gardening clothes.
