All about ‘Ave!’

Women’s Chorale performs pair of holiday shows

For two performances, the NorthWest Women’s Chorale presents its annual holiday concert “Ave!” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., and at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 N. Lopez Ave., Port Angeles.

Admission is a suggested donation of $10 at the door and both performances are handicap accessible.

Each show includes three settings of the “Ave Maria,” familiar carols and singalongs, and more.

Local musician Linda Dowdell presents a new choral number pairing “Away in a Manger” with an arrangement of jazz trumpeter Thad Jones’ “A Child is Born.”

“Each season we grow and improve musically. I think of the chorale like an artist’s palette — each new voice is like adding another color to the palette,” said director Joy Lingerfelt. “This season’s program is exhilarating for me. I know it will be one of our finest, if not our finest concert.”

Other special songs in these local shows include “Winter Snow” by Carol Barnett, set to the poem by Welsh/English poet Edward Thomas, and pianists Kristin Quigley Brye and Lingerfelt performing a rousing four-hands arrangement of Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride.”
