Back by popular demand, organizers of the Backyard Birding series have bird expert Denny Van Horn set to present “Becoming a Birder” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.
Hosted by members of the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society, the 10-class Backyard Birding offers interested local residents information about observing and protecting wild bird life in the region.
At the Nov. 3 class, students learn how to transition from watching birds to knowing birds. Van Horn Denny explains how to study birds using many of the same methods professional ornithologists use such as generating field notes and drawing “stick-bird” sketches for bird identifications. He will introduce numerous “tools of the trade,” including various field guides and online resources as well as binoculars, scopes and other optical aids for students to tryout. He will also discuss certain ethics essential to birding responsibly.
Backyard Birding can be taken either as individual classes or in a series. Each session is $5. Admission is free for anyone younger than 18.
For participants completing five sessions in the series, Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society offers a free one-year membership.
