‘Being a Birder’ is next in Backyard Birding series, set for Nov. 12 in Sequim

Denny Van Horn is the speaker at “Being a Birder,” the second in the series of 10 classes of the Backyard Birding series, set for 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park.

This class is an introduction to the overall basics of birding, starting with who birds are — e.g., what makes an American robin — along with how to look at, see and describe birds, and how to take notes on a bird.

The class also covers optics from “the cheap to the mega-expensive,” how to take field notes and how to draw stick-birds for ID purposes.

Van Horn provides information about getting started on a “Birding Year.” A variety choices of both binoculars and field guides will be available and use of websites describing species in the area and ways to keep records are included.

The series of classes, hosted by members of the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society, is intended for residents of this area who are interested in knowing more about birds seen locally each season of the year.

Backyard Birding can be taken either as individual classes or in a series. The cost of each session is $5 and is free for anyone under 18.

After the completion of five sessions, participants are offered free membership in OPAS for one year.
