Abstract expressionist Terry Grasteit and ceramic artist Janet Piccola will showcase their original artwork in “The World Around Us,” the new exhibit at the Blue Whole Gallery in February.

Meet the artists from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, during the First Friday Art Walk Sequim event.

Hours at the downtown Sequim gallery at 129 W. Washington St. are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday, through March.

Terry Grasteit said his goal is to create paintings that contain the elements of the world around us in new and unusual ways.

“I use color, form, and composition to express how I feel and think about a subject, time, or place,” he said.

Piccola is a local potter who said she enjoys creating pottery on the potter’s wheel as well as creating art using slab-built techniques and sculptural techniques. She discovered her love for ceramics after she retired from the fire service in the Sacramento, Calif., area. Her original wheel-throwing sessions expanded to include an apprenticeship at a historical pottery studio in the California foothills.

Piccola and her husband Frank moved to Washington state in 2014; she set up a studio at their home and has been busy creating ceramic art ever since.
