The Peninsula College English Department joins Tess Gallagher to present a poetry reading at Ocean View Cemetery, celebrating the life and work of writer Raymond Carver, who is buried there.

The reading will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 25, and will be followed by a pie potluck.

Carver was a short story writer whose stories were often set in the Pacific Northwest. He was born in Clatskanie, Ore., and grew up in Yakima, Wa. On Aug. 2, 1988, Carver died in Port Angeles, Washington, from lung cancer at the age of 50.

Featured poets will read work written by Carver, as well as poetry written for him. Since Theodore Roethke shares a birthday with Carver, and was a mentor for Tess, some of Roethke’s poetry will be included.

The event is free and open to the public. Ocean View Cemetery is at 3127 West 18th St., Port Angeles.
