Sequim’s second utility box installation comes from a relatively new resident.

Katelin Ghormley, 27, of Sequim, won the selection process through the Sequim Centennial Celebration Committee earlier this year after moving in January to be with family.

Her vinyl wrap was installed July 17 at the corner of Washington Street and Third Avenue by Matt Bailey from Bailey Signs in Port Angeles.

“To have them choose mine was pretty flattering,” Ghormley said.

This is her first professional installation. Ghormley said her concept focuses on children dreaming of Sequim and its many facets.

The style, using colored pencils and markers, is meant to be representative of a child’s drawing, with images such as a girl painting the sky blue and building the grain elevator out of clay.

Ghormley said this is one of many styles she dabbles in and is reminiscent of a children’s book series she’s working on.

All five sides of the utility box are covered, including the top, in vinyl that is weather-and-graffiti-proof.

The two largest sides are originally proofs she submitted for the project.

Throughout the project, she met with Mayor Ken Hays and Barbara Hanna, city communications and marketing director, who developed the concept for Sequim.

Dale Faulstich designed the city’s first vinyl wrap project, on the northeast corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street, using traditional Jamestown S’Klallam iconography.

Hanna said the committee chose Ghormley’s work because it was so different from Faulstich’s work and they liked the childlike quality of it.

“It shows how different and where people can go with them,” she said.

The city is open to doing more projects. These commissions cost $500 and the vinyl wrapping $1,000.

Sequim sponsored Ghormley’s project and the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe sponsored Faulstich’s project.

Hanna said ultimately they’d like to do five of them.
