Clallam Master Gardeners to hold free classes on pruning

How you trim your blueberry bushes can mean the difference between a yield of as much as 15 pounds of berries each year to only a handful a season.

Learn from Clallam County Master Gardeners Jeanette Stehr-Green and Audreen Williams how to properly prune blueberry bushes to yield the greatest amount of berries. The women will hold classes on Saturday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 8.

The veteran Master Gardeners will describe the typical growth pattern of a blueberry bush and will outline a systematic approach to pruning blueberries. They will discuss factors that affect pruning practices.

Stehr-Green and Williams will then demonstrate recommended pruning techniques on live blueberry bushes and answer questions about selecting, growing and pruning blueberries.

Stehr-Green has been a Master Gardener since 2003 and was the 2012 Clallam County Veteran Master Gardener of the Year. She has completed Oregon State University’s Online Blueberry School.

Williams joined Master Gardeners in 2012 and was the 2014 and 2019 Clallam County Veteran Master Gardener of the Year.

Both women have many years of experience growing berries of all types.

The training session will be held outdoors and will occur rain or shine. Participants should dress appropriately and be prepared to stand for 30 minutes or more.

The Feb. 1 session will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Fifth Street Community Garden in Port Angeles. The session on Feb. 8, which will be a repeat of the first session, will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Lazy J Tree Farm, 225 Gehrke Rd. in Port Angeles.

Attendance is limited. The sessions are free, but registration is required. For more information and to register, go to https://bit.ly/2025blueberries.
