Law enforcement testing scheduled for Sunday

If you are interested in getting a career in law enforcement, the first step is to take the Public Safety Test. OTA sets annual meeting

Olympic Theatre Arts will hold its annual meeting at noon on Saturday, Aug. 26. The meeting will be held in the OTA Gathering Hall at 414 N. Sequim Ave. Board members for the 2017-2018 term and the annual budget will be voted upon at the meeting. Call 683-7326 for more information.

Childhood favorites featured at library book sale

The Friends of Sequim Library will hold its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. This month’s special featured items include an extensive selection of Gilbert Morris’ historical fiction, 1962 Junior Classics (10 volumes), wood carving and how-to paintings and drawings. Also featured are children sets of animal art, books by authors Janice B. Jones and Beverly Cleary, “Magic Tree House” books, “Boxcar Children” books and many more. Proceeds from the sale benefit children’s and adult programming at the Sequim Library.

Coffee with mayor planned

The City of Sequim “Coffee with the Mayor” program continues in August. Sequim

Residents can meet informally with Mayor Dennis Smith at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill, 707 E. Washington St. The mayor will be at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community. Rotary’s annual salmon bake this weekend

The Sequim Noon Rotary Club will sponsors its 49th Annual Salmon Bake &BBQ from noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Sequim Boys &Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St. Plates are wood-fired salmon or pulled pork for $18 for adults. A jumbo all beef hot dog and a drink will be available for children under 12 years of age for $5.

Tickets are available from Noon Rotary Club members, The Fifth Avenue, Thomas Building Center, the Boys &Girls Club, Beal Carpet &Drapery or at the door.

Proceeds benefit Sequim children, local charities and Sequim Rotary projects.

Grange sets ice cream social

The Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, will host an ice cream social from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13. Banana splits or sundaes are $5 each. Proceeds for this social benefit Pennies for Quarters, an organization helping homeless veterans in Clallam County. For more information, call Marie at 683-4599.

Sea Hawkers raising ‘Coats for Kids’ this Saturday

Sequim’s Dungeness Bay Sea Hawkers are hosting a Coats for Kids Family Fundraiser from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road.

The event includes a Seahawk vehicle display, games, music, vendors, signed sportswear (for silent auction), a free raffle, food for purchase and more.

‘Stuff the Bus’ set

The Stuff-the-Bus school supply drive concludes this week. Donate school supplies in the donation bins located in numerous Sequim businesses and churches by Friday, Aug. 11, or donate supplies at the Stuff-the-Bus event held 2-6 p.m. at the Sequim Walmart, 1284 W. Washington St., on Aug. 11.

This year’s drive is organized by the Kiwanis Club of Sequim-Dungeness, in partnership with Sequim’s Back to School Fair Planning Committee.

Donation bins are located at Sequim Community Church, Walmart, KSQM 91.5 FM headquarters, QFC, Strait Flooring, Chase Bank, Clallam County PUD, Kris Hendriksen—Edward Jones, JCPenney, YMCA of Sequim, Sequim School District office, Around Again and other participating locations.

Supplies or monetary donations may be dropped off at the Boys &Girls Club of Sequim, 400 W. Fir St., or online at bgcop.org/donate.

Manage your mood through your mouth

The Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., Sequim, will host Monica Dixon, Ph.D., R.D., at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, for the sixth session of Healthy U! with a presentation on “Eat Well, Think Well: Managing Your Mood Through Your Mouth.”

Dixon is an internationally published author, speaker, psychologist and culinary nutritionist.

This event is open to the public and all ages, and is free for Shipley Center members; requested donation of $2 from non-members.

Japanese American film series on tap

In keeping with the 75th anniversary of the Japanese American removal and incarceration during World War II, a series of documentary films will be screened for free at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Each session will be from 6-9 p.m. The dates and films are Wednesday, Aug. 9, “Rumiko Hayashida: The Woman Behind the Symbol” and “Remembering Manzanar,” Wednesday, Aug. 16, “After Silence: Civil Rights and the Japanese American Experience,” and Wednesday, Aug. 23, “Hidden Internment: The Art Shibayama Story.”

BLOCK Fest event comes to Sequim on Aug. 15

As part of the North Olympic Library System’s annual Summer Reading Program, NOLS is working with the Parenting Matters Foundation and the First Teacher Program to bring BLOCK Fest to all North Olympic Library System locations over the course of the summer.

Build your way to fun with Sequim Library staff at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the Sequim Middle School cafeteria, 301 W. Hendrickson Road. Parents and/or caregivers accompany their child and are strongly encouraged to join in the play.

BLOCK Fest is a research-based block play program geared toward children from 8 months-8 years with their caregivers. Children and adults can rotate from station to station in a self-guided tour to play with a variety of different blocks.

More information about the Parenting Matters Foundation, the First Teacher Program and the research behind the BLOCK Fest phenomenon will be available.

Clallam beaches closed

Effective immediately, the Washington Department of Health has closed all Clallam County beaches for harvest of all species on the Strait of Juan de Fuca from Cape Flattery to the Jefferson County line.

Senior menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., on Tuesdays-Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.
