Garden club sheds light in, on log cabin

In 1965, the Earl Barrett family donated the 1893 Joseph Reyes log cabin to the Sequim Prairie Garden Club and Pioneer Memorial Park.

The structure was considered one of the best examples of vintage construction, said Vina Winters, president of the Sequim Prairie Garden Club.

The Zaccardo Nason family was the last family to occupy the cabin, where five of their children were born.

The Clallam County Historical Society took the responsibility of moving the log cabin to the park with help from the Sequim Prairie Grange, Sequim Rotary, Sequim Valley Lions and others.

The original cabin was hoisted on a truck with the help of a professional house mover, and moved to its new location in Pioneer Memorial Park. The original lean-to logs were tagged, dismantled and reassembled on site at the new location.

Without the funds to totally restore the cabin, it has become the place where the Sequim Prairie Garden Club keeps the tools and supplies to maintain the park, Winters noted. It was, however, quite dark inside; the original openings in the lean-to portion of the cabin were boarded up on the inside.

When they were boarded up is unknown but now volunteers have changed all that, Winters said. You can see how happy club members are with light streaming in. Windows are being made to fit the openings.
