Go ‘Fourth’ with patriotic Sequim City Band concert

Time to break out the red, white and blue.

The Sequim City Band has a bevy of patriotic tunes in store for the community as its musicians set their annual Independence Day concert, slated for 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, at The James Center for the Performing Arts, 350 N. Blake Ave.

The venue, located just north of Carrie Blake Community Park, is a grassy area so attendees of the free concert are encouraged to bring lawn chairs/blankets and a picnic.

With Paul Martin serving as announcer-narrator, the band has a set for classic and modern musical salutes to the U.S.A.

A sampling of the concert includes classic marches from three composers of the golden age of the American patriotic march: “On the Mal”l (Edwin Franko Goldman), “Our Own Red, White and Blue” (Henry Fillmore) and “The Liberty Bell” (John Philip Sousa). A commemorative feature saluting those who guard and protect our country will be “Where Never Lark or Eagle Flew.”

The concert will include the band’s tradition of honoring military veterans and current military personnel with the “Armed Forces Salute,” one that features each service branch’s song. Concert organizers encourage all military personnel wear a cap identifying their service branch.

There will be audience participation with “Sing for America,” where attendees can lift their voice with four songs celebrating America: “America, the Beautiful,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” “America” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

And, “American Flourish” features the familiar tunes “Yankee Doodle,” “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” and “Shenandoah” in an arrangement by Robert W. Smith.

The Sequim City Band, now in its 27th season of presenting free public concerts, typically has its largest summer audience for its July 4. Lawn seating at The James Center for the Performing Arts can accommodate 800 people.
