At the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, our mission has always been to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential—physically, mentally, and socially. Today, I’m honored to share news of an exciting and heartfelt initiative that has taken that mission one step further: the launch of Project L.A.N.E. — a healthy lifestyles program created in memory of Lane Richards.
This program, which stands for Lifestyle, Attitude, Nutrition, Exercise, is more than just a new program offering at our Clubs in Sequim and Port Angeles. It is a tribute to a well-lived life and a legacy that continues to inspire. Lane Richards was a personal trainer, mentor, and passionate advocate for fitness and well-being. Raised in Forks, and spending 30 years as a resident of Port Angeles, Lane made a lasting impact on the Olympic Peninsula. Even as he bravely battled multiple myeloma from July 2018 until his passing in August 2020, Lane remained a symbol of strength, positivity, and perseverance.
Through Project L.A.N.E., we’re weaving his values into the lives of Club members ages 5–18. The curriculum is designed to support the whole child — mind, body, and soul — through spirited, interactive, and age-appropriate activities. Youth will take part in fun physical challenges, learn about healthy eating, build positive attitudes, and strengthen critical life skills like teamwork, sportsmanship, and communication. Whether it’s engaging in a large group game in the gym, enjoying a nutritious meal, or simply learning to encourage a friend, every aspect of this program is meant to build confidence and character.
We know that healthy habits formed early can lead to lifelong wellness. At a time when young people face increasing challenges, from screen time overload to rising mental health concerns, Project L.A.N.E. offers a proactive, uplifting, and community-rooted solution.
And it couldn’t come at a more meaningful moment: Aug. 22 marked the five-year anniversary of Lane’s passing. As his widow, Karen Richards, recently shared, “I can’t think of a better tribute than seeing kids in Sequim and Port Angeles build confidence through a program inspired by Lane’s values.”
At our Clubs, we strive every day to be a place where young people feel safe, supported, and seen. With the addition of Project L.A.N.E., we are further strengthening our commitment to helping every child grow into the healthiest, happiest version of themselves. We are grateful to the Richards family for entrusting us with Lane’s memory and their vision for his legacy. It is a gift we carry forward with great care and purpose.
To the broader community: we invite you to be part of this journey. Whether through volunteering, donations, or simply spreading the word, your support helps us make a lasting difference. To learn more, register a child to participate in the program or to make a contribution, please call us at 360-683-8095.
Together, we can honor the memory of a dedicated community member and help the next generation thrive — one healthy habit at a time.
