Veteran WSU Clallam County Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green provides tips for selecting and caring for houseplants at noon Thursday, Feb. 23, in the county commissioners meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The presentation is part of the Green Thumb Garden Tips educational series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.

Stehr-Green will identify ways to increase light and humidity around houseplants, describe methods for determining if a plant needs water and discuss how to select a fertilizer appropriate for a flowering plant as compared to a foliage houseplant, recognize signs that a houseplant needs to be repotted and identify common pests affecting houseplants.

She will demonstrate how to repot a misshapen African violet. She also will identify the “easiest to grow” houseplants and provide links to valuable references so that participants can learn about the growth requirements and problems of specific houseplants.

Stehr-Green has been a Master Gardener since 2003, but has been growing houseplants since her youth. A frequent educational speaker for the Master Gardener program, she has written numerous articles for local newspaper gardening columns, appears monthly on the Todd Ortloff Show on KONP and also may be heard on the KSQM “Garden Show.” She leads summer garden walks at the 5th Street Garden in Port Angeles.

The Green Thumb Garden Tips education series is sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second and fourth Thursday of every month. Attendees may bring a lunch.
