The annual Sequim High School’s Jazz Dinner Dance will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Sequim High School cafeteria to fundraise money for the school’s band and color guard programs.

The event will open with the Sequim High School Jazz Band directed by Vern Fosket, followed by a performance from local community jazz musicians Stardust Big Band.

Michael Springer, the SHS Booster fundraiser chairman, said this event has been taking place in the community well over 10 years.

“Besides the Holiday Bazaar, the Jazz Dance is the biggest fundraiser we have,” said Springer.

He explained that last year was the biggest turnout for the event they have had so far, raising a total of $3,000 that is used toward transportation to and from events, instruments, new uniforms and any other needs of the SHS band and color guard.

This spring, the SHS band and color guard will travel to Anaheim, Calif., to perform in Disneyland’s Heritage Festival. Springer said students must raise their own money to pay for the trip to Disneyland, but money that is raised from events like the Jazz Dinner Dance help pay for transportation costs.

Springer also serves as a classroom liaison for the band students and said he stops by the band classes once a week on his day off to play the trumpet with students and his daughter, Kylyan, who is in third period band.

“Mr. Fosket has an amazing group of kids this year, they want to be there and they want to play, it’s amazing,” Springer said of SHS band students.

Tickets for the event cost $15 per person or $25 per couple at Full Moon Candle Co., 609 W. Washington St. #13, Sequim, or at the door and includes a full Hawaiian-themed dinner including pulled pork and chicken, rice, rolls and salad. Four attendees also have the chance to win a local gift card.

The doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 6:30 p.m. For more information about the event, contact Michael Springer at fishydad@wavecable.com or visit https://www.facebook.com/SequimHSBandBoosters/.
