Learn about composting in your home garden

Clallam County Solid Waste Coordinator Meggan Uecker will provide information to help home gardeners integrate composting into any size garden or space at noon on Thursday, May 23, in the county commissioners’ meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Attendees may bring a lunch.

The presentation is part of the Green Thumb Garden Tips education series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second and fourth Thursday of every month in Port Angeles. Presentations are free and open to the public. However, donations to help offset copying costs for handouts are accepted.

Uecker will provide an introduction to composting and its many benefits. She will also share space saving techniques such as grow heaps, trench composting, and comforter compost, for recycling yard and food waste right back into gardening areas, capturing valuable organic matter and nutrients that plants need for good growing.

Uecker has been home composting for 19 years and teaching others to compost at schools, gardens and workshops since 2008. She managed the Clallam County Waste Reduction program through WSU Clallam County Extension before becoming Solid Waste Coordinator in 2016.

The Green Thumb Garden Tips lecture series provides home gardeners with education on gardening topics relevant to planting and maintaining sustainable gardens and landscapes in Clallam County.
