Learn about fall/winter berry care

On Saturday, Aug. 19, veteran Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green will lead a presentation entitled “Fall and Winter Berry Care.” The class will be from 10-11 a.m. at the Master Gardener’s Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, Sequim.

Gardeners will learn about important steps that need to be taken to maintain plant health and improve next year’s harvest for strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries.

Stehr-Green will discuss strawberry plant replacement and how to properly prune and trellis raspberries and blackberries. She also will review pruning blueberry plants in the dormant season for optimal health.

Home gardeners will receive advice on protecting all of their berry plants from winter injury.

Stehr-Green has been a Master Gardener since 2003. She is a berry enthusiast and enjoys growing, picking and eating berries. She has been growing berries, including strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries, on the North Olympic Peninsula for over 15 years and enjoys teaching others how to improve the quality and size of their berry harvest.

The Saturday’s In the Garden lecture series is sponsored by the Clallam County Master Gardeners. The presentation is free and open to the public. No pre-registration is required. For more information, call 360-565-2679.
