The Clallam Conservation District is offering free workshops on landscaping with native plants. The first is 2:30-4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.. A second workshop is set for 2:30-4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Dungness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim.
The workshops are free; however, because of space limitations, pre-registration is required. Register online at clallamcd.org/workshops, by calling 360-775-3747 x5, or email to info@clallamcd.org.
The workshops focus on environmentally friendly landscaping principles, with special emphasis on the use of native trees and shrubs. Topics such as the cultural requirements, landscaping values, aesthetic attributes and environmental and wildlife habitat benefits of trees and shrubs native to the North Olympic Peninsula will be covered.
In addition, workshop participants receive tips on designing a more sustainable landscape, learn how to care for bare-root trees and shrubs and prepare for planting.
Many of the plants discussed during the workshops are sold by the Clallam Conservation District as part of their annual Native Plant Sale. They are taking orders for bare-root native trees and shrubs through Jan. 24. Descriptions of the plants offered for sale, ordering information and online ordering is available at clallamcd.org/plant-sale. (There is also an order form on their website that can be mailed in.)
