Learn about pruning for the dormant season

WSU Clallam County Master Gardener Keith Dekker explains how to enhance the health and beauty of home landscapes through proper pruning during the dormant season at noon Thursday, Oct. 11, in the county commissioners’ meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The presentation is part of the Clallam County Master Gardener Green Thumb Garden Tips educational series held from noon-1 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

Dekker’s presentation covers both evergreen and deciduous pruning, but the primary focus will be on techniques for pruning of deciduous trees, shrubs and cane growers after they have dropped their leaves and before new leaves form. He will explain what types of pruning should and should not be done during the dormant season, how much plant material can be removed, and why and how proper pruning techniques can enhance the natural beauty of trees and shrubs.

Dekker has more than 40 years of horticulture experience in garden centers, nurseries, greenhouses and in commercial landscape maintenance. After 25 years of residential landscaping in the Seattle area, he moved to Clallam County. He became a Master Gardener in 2017 and was named Intern of the Year.

Dekker teaches pruning classes to garden clubs and for PlantAmnesty’s pruning certification program.

The Oct. 25 Green Thumb topic will be “Your Yard is Wildlife Habitat”, a

change from the original schedule.
