Learn how to encourage bees at next Green Thumbs online session

Join Nita Wester, a Jefferson County Master Gardener, who will provide information on native bee species that live in Washington State and North America at the next Green Thumbs education series session.

Wester’s presentation, “Native Bees: Making Your Garden Their Home,” is set for noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, via the Zoom application. Wester will address methods for researching native bees and talk about how citizens can them in their survival.

Her presentation will include information on the small changes that gardeners can make to provide good habitats for bees and other beneficial insects, including the best flowers, shrubs, and trees to have in your garden to encourage a healthy native bee population.

She will discuss gardening practices to cultivate and gardening practices to avoid and, will recommend resources to give attendees the opportunity to continue to learn about native bees and how to help them long after the presentation is over.

A lifelong vegetable gardener and a retired public-school teacher, Wester designed individualized curriculum for students of all ages, interests and abilities in a K-12 alternative program and the highly capable program. As a Jefferson County Master Gardener, she has been one of the instructors of the popular “Growing Groceries” class for the past six years. In 2019 Wester received the Distinguished Service Award for her volunteer efforts in all aspects of the Jefferson County Master Gardener program.

The Green Thumbs Garden Tips education series, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners, is held on the second and fourth Thursday each month through October.
