Gardeners who adore their plants and want more of them are encouraged to learn from local nursery owner Iris Fagerland at the next Green Thumb Education Series presentation.
Fagerland will detail how reproduce and share more of the plants you love with “Expand Your Garden, Asexual Propagation Through Cuttings,” held noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Port Angeles Library, 221 S. Peabody St.
Join in person or by Zoom by clicking on a link at the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar (extension.wsu.edu/clallam; meeting ID 936 2989 8830, passcode 676224). Or join by phone by calling 253-215-8782.
While many plants replicate from seeds, others can be reproduced by parts of a parent plant such as their stems, roots or leaves. Fagerland will delve into the various forms of plant propagation to help you multiply your plants with the techniques, tricks and hard-won experience she’s developed over years of trial and error.
Fagerland began her gardening career about the same time she was learning how to walk. Her mother Terri taught her how to collect and identify seeds, then made a game of memorizing which seeds would grow into what plants, how deep to plant them, when to plant them, and what kind of light was needed for each. These early childhood games deeply imbued a love of nature and plant lore that would last a lifetime.
Now, 40 years later, Iris owns Earth Grown Creations, a nursery in Port Orchard with more than 20,000 plants, specializing in perennial flowers, shrubs, trees and herbs. Iris proudly grows and propagates all 1,400 varieties of her own nursery stock. (For more information, visit EarthGrownCreations.com).
Sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners, the Green Thumbs Garden Tips education series is offered on the second and fourth Thursday each month through October (in November, December and January, one program is offered).
