Learn how to harness heat units for your garden

Warm up your knowledge on how heat units can affect good gardening practices with Clallam County Master Gardener Laurel Moulton for a Green Thumb Gardening Tips Zoom presentation from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, March 24.

In “Harnessing the Power of Heat Units for Your Garden’s Success,” Moulton will discuss what heat units are, how they are calculated and how calculating heat units can help gardeners and farmers manage certain pests in a more effective and sustainable manner.

She will also cover how heat units can help gardeners understand what crops are suitable for a particular location and where to find and use online tools that make heat units a more accessible tool.

Moulton has been a Master Gardener since 2006 and received her master’s degree in horticulture with a minor in entomology from Oregon State University in 2011. She a member of the WSU Extension Integrated Pest Management Team and spends her time outside of Master Gardeners helping small farms in Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap counties to identify pests and crop diseases and develop plans to manage them sustainably.

The Green Thumb Garden Tips education series, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners, is held on the second and fourth Thursday each month through October. In November, December, and January, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change.
