Learn how to produce potatoes from seed

Veteran Master Gardener Muriel Nesbitt will discuss how to produce potatoes from seed at noon Thursday, June 22, in the county commissioners meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The presentation is part of the Green Thumb Garden Tips education series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.

Nesbitt will describe the reproduction system of potatoes and the difference between planting true potato seed and seed potatoes or tubers. She will explain how to sow, cultivate and harvest the potato crop and save seeds. She will discuss how cultivating seeds contributes to the biodiversity of potato crops. She also will talk about potato varieties, the history of potato domestication and potato diseases.

Nesbitt, who earned a PhD in genetics from the University of Washington, retired from teaching biology at the University of California–San Diego. She directed the Clallam County Master Gardener program from 2009-2012. She is a frequent speaker on sustainable growing and instructor for the Master Gardener intern training.

This presentation replaces the lecture on garden beetles, which originally was scheduled for this date.

The Master Gardener Green Thumb Garden Tips education series continues on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Presentations are from noon-1 p.m. For more information, call 565-2679.
