While some people use chainsaws to cut down trees, Eric Berson uses them to create art.

Berson, a Port Angeles resident, said he’s been chainsaw sculpting for 16 years and is self-taught. He started sculpting while living in Alaska and continues to improve his craft today.

After bark beetles destroyed many of the trees at his home in Alaska, Berson said he would hollow out the rotted wood and sculpt using the remaining tree.

Shortly after he started, he became successful enough in Alaska to sell his work. That’s when he realized he had a business.

“It’s a lot of hard work,” Berson said. “You have to be a self-motivated person.”

He and his wife Jennifer Berson moved to Port Angeles 14 years ago. They opened their retail shop, The Dreamer’s Woods, in May, at 618 E. Washington St. in Sequim.

The shop offers a variety of his wood sculptures and distinctive gifts.

In addition to the sculptures he sells in his storefront, Berson said he does customized wood sculptures and furniture pieces.

Much of his sculptures are of wildlife, such as bears, eagles, moose, and a new popular request he’s received while living in Washington state is Bigfoot.

His sculptures range anywhere from 1 foot tall to many larger than life sculptures of about 8 feet.

Sculpting can take anywhere from 20 minutes to several days, he said, depending on the size of the project.

Berson’s favorite projects include larger, customized pieces, as well as sculpted eagles.

Berson does much of the chainsaw sculpting at his workshop in Port Angeles and some finishing work at his shop in Sequim.

To finish off the details of his sculptures, Berson said he uses oil-based stains or burning techniques.
